Let me introduce you to Cardiff’s best kept secret – The Deck – a cosy but positively charming coffee house and cakery nestled covertly down a side street in Cardiff Bay. The Deck offers its customers so much more than the usual café establishment; the food here is seriously good with a vast menu full of generously sized meals, a delicious array of cakes (all home-baked in the kitchen downstairs), sofas you can really sink into and staff that go out of their way to put a smile on your face.

For the uninitiated visitor, the hearty ‘Hog and Hen’ roll is a must, followed swiftly by a scrummy cupcake. For me, their infamous Jaffa Cake cupcake is heaven, but just to be sure I’m slowly working my way through their other variations too! An afternoon is easily lost in this lovely space, but bellies and hearts certainly leave a little fuller.

The Norwegian church in Cardiff is my go to place if I fancy an afternoon of gluttony and people watching. A pretty building that was once home to Norwegian sailors visiting our shores in the late 1900s, the church is also famous as the venue for the baptism of local-born Roald Dahl. Today it’s a vibrant centre of the arts blessed with beautiful views casting over Cardiff Bay.

I’d recommend taking a seat on the veranda and sampling the traditional Welsh cawl; a bowl full of succulent lamb and vegetables, topped with Welsh rarebit croutons. My favourite part of this dish is soaking up the juices with thick white bread – I warn you there may be the licking of fingers and the mopping up of chins involved! If you’re feeling particularly naughty then how about following your meal with a Merlyn Welsh Whiskey liqueur coffee? Best served with a dash of whipped cream, it’s always a winner.
